Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) is an Engineering and Technology University in Brunei Darussalam that specialises in the niche areas of Engineering, Business, Computing, Applied Sciences & Mathematics, and Design.
UTB was first established in 1986 as Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), a higher learning institution offering Higher National Diploma programmes in Engineering, Business and Computing. In 2008, ITB was upgraded to a university and was renamed to Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) on 1 March 2016.
Since the upgrade, the university has seen tremendous development including the expansion of its academic programmes portfolio, establishment of partnerships with industries and universities, embarking on the process of programme accreditation by professional bodies, and intensification of research activities.
UTB’s ethos has always been based around the idea that effective instruction, hands-on approach and industry-based programmes equip students with fundamental knowledge, competence and marketable skills. This guiding principle has helped UTB produce graduates highly valued by local employers and readily accepted by universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and around the world.
In research, UTB strives to become a university that contributes to enrichment of knowledge and solving contemporary issues with research focused on Energy, Sustainable Built Environment, Agrifood, Digital and Creativity, Society and Enterprise, and Wellness. These Research Thrusts provide platforms for academic staff from various faculty and schools and centre to collaborate. UTB Research Centres perform active research in multidisciplinary expert teams and engages external stakeholders such as government agencies, companies and other stakeholders to win grants, consultancies and others. This include Centre for Innovative Engineering (CIE) – which aims to become a dynamic centre for multidisciplinary and innovative translational research; the Centre for Transport Research (CfTR) – established to carry out research activities that include policy studies, transport modelling and intelligent transport system, and focuses on the areas of Transport Safety, Highway & Geotechnics, and Traffic; and the Centre for Research in Agri Food Science & Technology (CrAFT) – a new research centre that aims to support the nation’s aspiration to diversify its economy by strengthening the Agrifood industry using science and technology.
Currently, UTB is ranked at 344 worldwide by the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking (QSWUR) and has climbed up 98 places since its first debut in 2019. This has placed UTB at 40 for Young Global University under 50 years of age.
In Asia, UTB is among the top 200 universities ranked at 126 among a total of 687 institutions across the continent. This achievement has placed UTB amongst the top 8 Engineering and Technology university in Southeast Asia.
UTB has also marked another milestone after being awarded the 5-Plus Star rating for excellence by QS. This achievement has placed UTB amongst the fifteen universities in the world and the only university in Southeast Asia to receive the prestigious QS 5-Plus Star Award. The 5-Plus Star Award recognises the University as an elite destination for the very best students and faculty worldwide, and acknowledges UTB’s research excellence, quality in teaching, globalisation experience for students, and capacity for nurturing student talent.

In terms of research, UTB strives to become a university that contributes to the enrichment of knowledge and solving contemporary issues that focuses on energy, sustainable built environment, agri-food, digital and creativity, society and enterprise, and wellness. In 2018, the Centre for Research in Agri-food Science & Technology (CrAFT) was established to support the nation’s aspiration to diversify its economy by strengthening the agri-food industry using science and technology.
UTB has developed its new five-year Strategic Plan 2019-2023, focusing on four strategic areas: Quality Education, Independent Learners, Translational Research and Quadruple Helix Engagement. Successful implementation of initiatives under these focus areas within the five-year period will see the University improving its global prominence while making a strong impact and contribution to the country’s human resource, industrial and enterprising capabilities.

Are all programmes offered in January and August Intake?
All undergraduate degree programmes are available for July/August Intake only. For graduate programmes, only Master’s by research and PhD programmes are available for January Intake but for August Intake, all Master’s by coursework, Master’s by research and PhD programmes are available.
What are the general admission requirements?

What if I do not fulfil the English requirements for admission?
The English requirement is one of the criteria of the University’s minimum entry requirement for all programmes. Applicants need to attain at least a Credit Six in English Language at GCE Ordinary Level or an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL minimum overall score 550 or its equivalent. Applicants not meeting the requirement may not be eligible for enrolment into any undergraduate degree programme.
What scholarships available for undergraduate degree programme at UTB?
Apart from the Award of the Brunei Government Scholarship for studying in the local Higher Education Institutions for local citizens (subject to meeting all the requirements set by the government), there is a scholarship scheme offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs known as the Brunei Darussalam Government’s Scholarship (BDGS) for foreign students only. Are students with Foundation Course accepted into the undergraduate degree programme?
The Foundation Course needs to be verified as par/equivalent to a Level 5 qualification in BDQF by the Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council, Ministry of Education to be eligible for admission into a Level 6 undergraduate degree programmes.
Where do I apply for UTB undergraduate degree programme?
You can apply through Apply@UTB at our UTB online application and select undergraduate.
What are the application deadlines?
UTB processes applications for undergraduate degree studies once a year. Application period is normally open from February to March. For graduate programmes, the closing date is twice a year, January Intake – 31st August, and for August Intake – 31st March.

What supporting documents are needed for application submission?
For undergraduate degree:

Please provide a personal statement explaining why you have chosen this course, how your previous education and experience have prepared you for the course and impact it will have on your future career.
Masters by research / PhD applicants:
Please provide an outline of your proposed research programme. This should include an outline of the research questions/areas, aims of the project, methodology (if known), potential impact of the research and some key background literature/references (1500 words). Please also state your preferred supervisor (if known).

What if I accidentally submitted an incomplete application or information was not correct in online application?
The university reserves the right to reject this application if, at any stage, the information provided is incorrect. Please take note that any changes are not allowed once you have submitted the application. You are advised to check your application thoroughly before submitting.
